Board of Directors

The Board of Directors meeting will be held on August 16 at 3pm in the Clubhouse ballroom. In addition to the usual topics and reports, there will be a Master Plan update, and all residents are encouraged to attend to stay informed of the progress. There will be a Board candidate job description discussed, and a customer service survey. We hope to see you then.

Core Value:  The Board of Directors and Management will act in the best interests of our community for both residents and employees.

New Speeding Controls

In an effort to encourage The Highlands residents and visitors to adhere to the 25 MPH speed limit and respect stop signs in community, staff in partnership with the Infrastructure and Facilities Committee, have added painted reminders on Heritage Club and Heritage Gateway streets. These crisp, white messages look great and are easy to read. No more excuses for rolling through these stop signs or speeding down Heritage Gateway. Thank you to staff and volunteers for seeing this project to fruition.

North Gate Still Under Repair

Residents may have noticed that the North Gate has been open due to an equipment malfunction. Facilities Manager John Clemans has been working with two gate companies to remedy the problem as quickly as possible.  We had believed the gate was repaired but after having recent intermittent issues, a new modem has been ordered and is due to be installed early next week.   Your patience is appreciated.

Relocating Gas Service

Southwest Gas will be working at the west end of the Clubhouse starting on August 10 to relocate gas service.  Excavation will continue through August 15, when gas will be shut off from 6-10am. The project should be completed shortly after that time.  Golf shop parking will be impacted only in the north section. Safety barricades will be put in place, and day-cart parking will be moved back six feet.  Cart access to the golf shop will not be affected.

Defining A Guest

At times residents take a far too liberal view of who is a guest. The CCRs define a guest as “a visitor who is temporarily staying with an Owner.”  A guest is further defined in the HOA Rules and Regulations as “a non-resident friend or relative of either a Member or Qualified Renter who is visiting The Highlands at the personal invitation and with specific knowledge and sponsorship of that resident or Qualified Renter.”

What these definitions are attempting to clarify is that friends who live outside the community are not considered guests to use the clubhouse and our drop-in amenities such as the tennis courts, pool, fitness center, billiards, etc. The only public spaces at the clubhouse are the Grille and the golf course within limitations.

News  from the Community Standards Team

It is mid-August and the monsoon rains have got everything growing. This means notices will soon be going out to homeowners for yard cleanup. Please have your weeds and grasses sprayed and tree pods taken away as soon as possible.  If you have dead plants in your yard, they should also be taken out. If you are a snowbird, the cleanup can't wait until your return. Once clean up requests go out, there will be a two-week period to complete the requested clean up before fine notices could occur.

If your house paint is chipping, fading, or has stains, please arrange to have it painted. The ALC has approved many new color choices, or you can simply repaint using the same colors. (Repainting the exact same color combination does not require a permit, as an added bonus.) The new paint not only looks good and adds to your home’s value, but it also protects the walls from weather damage.

Lastly, we as well as your fellow homeowners would like to thank walkers for reporting water  leaks this summer. No one wants to waste water or have an enormous water bill.

Thank you for keeping The Highlands beautiful.

Walk on The Wildside

In August, golf will be starting on hole #10 except of the 3rd week of August (14-20) golf will be starting on hole #1. View the map of starting on Hole #10.

#5         .15”
#7         .14”
#11       .24”
#13       .21”
#16       .20”
This is an average of a .188” for the course.
Monsoon rain average 2.062” since July 9.
Year to date average 7.322” since December 14.
Remember that the airport has received over 7” since July 9.
Remember 5.26” of this was in the first quarter of the year (January through March).

A Message from Mike and the Staff at Golf Maintenance
August is the month were the monsoon rains have helped with transition issues and also gets the water budget back on track. 2017 has been a warm dry year so far. While the course has received 1.874” of monsoon rain we are still behind other areas of the Tucson/Marana area. Tucson International Airport received 6.80” of rain in 21 days!!! Other areas have over 8” to 10” of rain for the monsoon. Currently we have 7.134” for our annual total this year with 5.26” coming in the first quarter (January through March). The course has continued to be in great condition and staff is getting ready for overseeding in September.

1) The height of cut on the rough turf areas is at 1-1/4“and will be maintained at this height for the rest of the summer.

2) As mentioned in the July message staff verticutt and top-dressed the greens on the third of August. This was a practice that was recommended from the visit from the USGA. Staff was able to complete this practice before 12pm. We will work with the golf shop to see how we can incorporate this practice into the summer of 2018.

3) Staff has been applying chemical to keep the algae under control to both of our lakes on the course. We have been asked if we are feeding the fish and or coloring the water. We have had to treat the water more this summer due to the high temperature and the recent higher humidity.

4) Pre-emergent was applied on the course for winter weed control on July 13th and 20th. We also sprayed for grub/chafer control on August 3rd.

5) Staff continues to work with the AD HOC team to review future renovation plans for the bunkers and greens. These ideas will be presented to the entire community when plans and costs have been studied. There’s no set time frame for this work to happen and nothing has been approved as of the correspondence.

6) Staff will add sod around the new tree on the eighth hole. This area will be roped off and marked ground under repair.

Summer is a busy time for the staff. We have had some rain in the past three weeks but look forward to some more. Thank you for all of the positive comments in regards to the condition of your course.
